I can personally vouch for the fun in this game, having played an imported arcade cabinet at web games service Kongregate’s San Francisco headquarters, where the execs make it a ritual to play the game after every business meeting.īy far the best part of the Pac-Man preview showcase was Pac-Man producer himself, Kunito Komori, who greeted press while waving around a Minecraft sword he bought at Hot Topic. Players each control a color-coded Pac-Man and race around the map, trying to eat first all the ghosts – and then each other. This is a 4-player arcade game that previously existed only in Japan as a cabinet game. Last was the game that wasn’t available in the Namco Bandai booth (but will be on the show floor during day 2 of E3): Pac-Man: Battle Royale. Unlocking all the medals and achievements will win the player ONE of the reskin maps – but these players can get them all as downloadable content. Those that already own CE DX will get a tiny taste of this with an update that adds the leaderboards, the non-reskin maps, and the medals/achievements. Most of the maps are fresh layouts on the traditional game a few, however, are reskinned maps done in the style (and with the music) of classic games like Dig Dug and Rally X. ![]() The full Plus edition keeps this fast-and-furious gameplay, adds new social features like friend rankings and medals or achievements, and also introduces all-new maps to the experience. Players navigate the map at speed, alerting more and more ghosts to Pac-Man’s presence and eventually building up a giant tail of pursuing ghosts to form a “ghost train” that can be consumed en-masse when Pac-Man hits a power pellet. For those of you that missed out on the 2010 XBLA surprise hit, CE DX allows players to play traditional Pac-Man at a much faster rate with even more ghosts that are triggered by proximity. ![]() Next up is Pac-Man CE DX+, which should be read as “Pac-Man Championship Edition DX (no idea what that stands for) Plus (because there’s more stuff).” This game is both an update to 2010’s original Pac-Man CE DX and a completely new suite of content featuring fan service for classic arcade game fans. Experience game franchises from past generations and. That version of the game was not shown in action at the E3 presentation. Get ready for FPS Boost, higher resolution, and Auto HDR from Xbox One, Xbox 360, and Original Xbox games. Ghostly Adventures is also available for 3DS, but the audience for that game is intended to be younger still - meaning that it’s a side-scrolling platformer instead of a 3D action platformer. Interestingly, Pac-Man can attack ghosts at any time - or use a special attack to turn them blue (and cause them to flee) and eat them the more traditional way. In the demo level shown to journalists and up for hands-on time at Namco Bandai’s E3 meeting room was a Park Panic level where players could transform into a frog-looking Pac-Man with an extendable tongue that both captured ghosts for Pac-Man to eat and allowed him to attach to parts of the level to reach new platforms. The world is littered with things for Pac-Man to eat for points and health - standard food items and pac-dots - and also with special power-up pac-dots that give him special powers. In Ghost Adventures, players control the young Pac-Man, navigating him through the city to save his neighbors from attacking ghosts. Until he ends up in a high school full of them. However, no one really seems to believe him, which leads Pac to believe that maybe theyre right and hes the crazy one here. After viewing both the trailer and the game side-by-side, it’d be hard to mistake Ghostly Adventures for anything other than what it is: a TV tie-in. Pac is that one kid who believes in ghosts due to his aunts influence in his life and of what she had seen in her time in the war. Because it’s your average Saturday morning cartoon (Sonic the Hedgehog had one of those!), this console title skews a little younger with very straightforward platforming and 3D adventure gameplay. The Disney show features a young Pac-Man defending a modern city from evil ghosts that threaten all Pac-citizens. Namco Bandai showed the press all three games and the TV show in their E3 press meeting room.įirst among the three games is the TV show tie-in, Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures. It’s a big year for Pac-Man with an animated Disney TV series debuting June 15, and three new games hitting Xbox Live, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii-U, Windows 8, Steam and Nintendo 3DS.

The Fall of Acre in 1291 marked the destruction of the last remaining Crusader refuge in the Holy Land, and Pope Clement V dissolved the Knights Templar in 1312. Many of them, however, were robbed and killed as they crossed through Muslim-controlled territories during their journey.Īround 1118, a French knight named Hugues de Payens created a military order along with eight relatives and acquaintances that became the Knights Templar, and they won the eventual support of the pope and a reputation for being fearsome fighters. In 1099, Christian armies captured Jerusalem from Muslim control, and groups of pilgrims from across Western Europe started visiting the Holy Land. The Crusades began in 1095, when Pope Urban summoned a Christian army to fight its way to Jerusalem, and continued on and off until the end of the 15th century. (They also received more worldly rewards, such as papal protection of their property and forgiveness of some kinds of loan payments.) Crusaders, who wore red crosses on their coats to advertise their status, believed that their service would guarantee the remission of their sins and ensure that they could spend all eternity in Heaven. Toward the end of the 11th century, the Catholic Church began to authorize military expeditions, or Crusades, to expel Muslim “infidels” from the Holy Land. ![]() And religious scholars and mystics translated, interpreted and taught the Quran and other scriptural texts to people across the Middle East. Inventors devised technologies like the pinhole camera, soap, windmills, surgical instruments, and an early flying machine. Scholars translated Greek, Iranian and Indian texts into Arabic. Poets, scientists and philosophers wrote thousands of books (on paper, a Chinese invention that had made its way into the Islamic world by the 8th century). Under the caliphs, great cities such as Cairo, Baghdad and Damascus fostered a vibrant intellectual and cultural life. At its height, the medieval Islamic world was more than three times bigger than all of Christendom. After the prophet Muhammad’s death in 632 CE, Muslim armies conquered large parts of the Middle East, uniting them under the rule of a single caliph. Meanwhile, the Islamic world was growing larger and more powerful. These policies helped it to amass a great deal of money and power. Ordinary people across Europe had to “tithe” 10 percent of their earnings each year to the Church at the same time, the Church was mostly exempt from taxation. Over time, Charlemagne’s realm became the Holy Roman Empire, one of several political entities in Europe whose interests tended to align with those of the Church. ![]() In 800 CE, for example, Pope Leo III named the Frankish king Charlemagne the “Emperor of the Romans”–the first since that empire’s fall more than 300 years before. Kings, queens and other leaders derived much of their power from their alliances with and protection of the Church. Instead, the Catholic Church became the most powerful institution of the medieval period. The Catholic Church in the Middle AgesĪfter the fall of Rome, no single state or government united the people who lived on the European continent. However, today’s scholars note that the era was as complex and vibrant as any other. This way of thinking about the era in the “middle” of the fall of Rome and the rise of the Renaissance prevailed until relatively recently. It was especially deadly in cities, where it was impossible to prevent the transmission of the disease from one person to another. ![]() The people of the Middle Ages had squandered the advancements of their predecessors, this argument went, and mired themselves instead in what 18th-century English historian Edward Gibbon called “barbarism and religion.”ĭid you know? Between 13, a mysterious disease known as the "Black Death" (the bubonic plague) killed some 20 million people in Europe-30 percent of the continent’s population. Accordingly, they dismissed the period after the fall of Rome as a “Middle” or even “Dark” age in which no scientific accomplishments had been made, no great art produced, no great leaders born. Starting around the 14th century, European thinkers, writers and artists began to look back and celebrate the art and culture of ancient Greece and Rome. The phrase “Middle Ages” tells us more about the Renaissance that followed it than it does about the era itself. 12/1/2023 0 Comments Building a hidden doorWant to a know a little secret? To save money on modern trim, I actually just primed, painted, and installed 1 x 4’s as our baseboard. Whether you’re the fairest one of all or not, a mirror door offers a magical way to enter a secret room. I continued the same baseboard along the door as the wall, but I cut both pieces of baseboard trim at a 45 degree angle on the backside of the door to allow it to swing open fully. The finishing touch for creating a door that blends in with the wall is to install baseboard. After mudding, sanding, priming, and painting, the seams are so close together you barely see the line! To get the seams of the door really tight, I ran corner bead along the edges of both sheets of drywall: the wall and the edge of the door. They release and catch the door beautifully so there’s no need for a handle or knob protruding out. Even a hardware-only kit costs at least 150. Most also require replacing the entire door frame. The key is in the hidden door hinges and hidden door hardware more specifically, the hidden door latch. The DIY hidden doorway bookcase takes time but can easily be broken up into fun, small and rewarding steps. If you have somewhere you need a minimalistic trimless door, this idea is for. We installed two push latches that are magnetic on the inside, one on top and one on bottom. I found that professional, pre-made murphy doors start at around 1,000. We are in the process of building out the hidden arcade that this secret door opens up to. I designed the coolest hidden door to give an understated entrance to closet storage in our brand new bathroom. The door opens by pushing on it in the middle. To conceal these hinges a bit better, I simply painted them white with paint formulated to stick to metal. When the door was constructed, we mounted it with regular door hinges because of how heavy it was. ![]() My contractor helped construct the main frame with simple 2 x 4’s, created a box he then screwed a piece of drywall onto. Collect all the necessary tools and materials you will need for a murphy door. If you have a spot in your home you need to have a door but wish you didn’t, creating this could be a great solution! In this case, suppose you are building a bookcase murphy door. Finally, cut each bolt to 2in (5cm) long. Then, weld a bolt to each plate for extra strength. First, weld a piece of scrap 1/4in (6mm) plate to each pivot point, one of which should be on the top of the frame and the other, directly opposite it on the bottom. Youll lose 10 inches of walkway space for these doors. Attach 3/4in (19mm) bolts to act as the pivot pins. I wanted something that didn’t attract attention and allowed the eye to scan the space, skipping right over the door on this long blank wall. There is also another major advantage of a non-protruding lens element. This is a great thing when you’re using filters or polarizers as turning the focusing ring would not rotate the filters mounted at the front end of the lens. The lens focuses internally and the barrel does not even rotate. Unlike the MicroMotor type USM they are quicker when focusing and also silent making them less intimidating.Īnother good thing about the EF 100 mm f/2.8L IS USM is that when focusing the front elements of the lens does not push forward. It is a reassuring feeling in these conditions if your lens is weather sealed to go with a weather sealed body.Ĭanon’s L series lenses feature RingType USM (UltraSonic Motor). Macro photography is often practiced outdoors, in the woods or in the middle of nature. The lens is weather sealed making it an ideal companion to have when shooting outdoors. Pick the lens up in hand and the feeling is reassuring. Engineered plastics gives a similar quality build but they are comparatively lighter. The rest of the body is made with “engineered plastic”. The focusing ring, the lens mount and the plates carrying the numbers and details are made with aluminum. The EF 100 mm f/2.8L IS USM is not built entirely with aluminum. They are all weather types and can withstand water (some lenses may need an additional UV filter to complete the weather sealing, so if you’re unsure whether your lens is weather sealed, don’t expose it to water). Normally Canon’s L series lenses are very tough. The Canon EF 100 mm f/2.8L IS USM is a great lens for serious Macro photography enthusiasts. Normally a 1:1 magnification is necessary to make a great quality macro photograph but higher ratios are also possible and can capture incredible amount of details of objects that are normally impossible to be seen by the naked eye.Ĭanon’s line of L series Macro lenses are incredibly sharp and offer a photographer with options to shoot very small subjects from a close focusing distance. 1:1 magnification denotes that the size of the subject on the sensor (and thus on the final image) is the exact same as that of its size in real life. A 1:1 magnification ratio is normally used to shoot very small subjects. Macro photography is all about shooting images of subjects which are very small and then filling the entire frame with them. First is the ability to magnify the image to a minimum ratio of 1:1 and the second is the ability to focus without protruding the lens elements outside the barrel. Two things are extremely important when it comes to choosing macro lenses. For the ease of understanding, however, we shall be referring these close-up lenses as Macro in our discussion. While Canon refers their lenses as Macro, Nikon prefers to call them Micro. For some unknown reasons two of the major lens manufacturers refer to their range of extreme close-up photography lenses with two different names. It is a segment of photography that deals with shooting pictures of small subjects at a size of 1:1 ratio or larger magnification and in the process capturing incredible details which are normally impossible to notice. ![]() ![]() Macro lenses can open a completely new dimension to your photography.
